We are the Bill, Jennifer, Caitlin & Dallas Green. God has called
us to the Deaf of Mexico to share the gospel of Jesus Christ in the
state of Yucatan. There are an estimated 10,000 Deaf people in the city
of Merida and before 2004, when our co-workers arrived, there was no one
trying to reach the Deaf. For a year before we arrived, David and
Stephanie Peach held a Wednesday Night Bible Study in a local church
with a small group of Deaf teenagers. David
also tutored in the Deaf Association here as a means of contacting the
Deaf in this area. We arrived here in May of 2006 and began taking
Mexican sign language classes through the Deaf association. Bill then
began tutoring with David in the fall and in October of 2006 God led us
to start a Deaf Church.
Many people do not realize that sign language is not universal.
There are more then 200 official sign languages throughout the world and
many areas don’t have an official language but use a series of “home
signs” that only their family may know. Here in the capital city of
Merida they are trying
to educate the deaf, but in the surrounding villages there are many
Deaf who are without any type of formal education. They have no way to
effectively communicate. Many may not even know their own names, if they
even have names. Our main goal is to share the story of Jesus and to
give the Deaf an opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior. For
those who have some education, this is a difficult thing for them to
understand. For others, who are not educated, we must first teach them
to communicate before we can tell them about Jesus.
One of our goals is to eventually work with the Deaf in the villages.
Right now we are working in the church we have started while we try to
get a better grasp on the Spanish language and Mexican Sign Language.
David and Stephanie plan to leave in about a year, as God leads, to
start a Deaf work in another Latin American country. It is our desire
to train the Deaf to reach the Deaf. Our prayer is that one day we will
send out Deaf missionaries from Yucatan to other parts of Mexico. There
are many directions our ministry could take and we are currently praying
for God to show us His will.
While God has called us to the Deaf of Yucatan, we are not ignoring the
hearing. We have started a campaign to get a copy of John/Romans and a
gospel track in every home in the city of Merida. With a population of
almost one million people this in itself is a huge task!
It has been estimated that if all the Deaf in the world were gathered
into one country it would be the third largest country in the world.
But, the Deaf are not in one country. They are scattered throughout the
world and there are few missionaries trained to reach them. God has
called us to bring the true message of salvation to this unreached
people group in Yucatan, Mexico. As we strive to do this we would be
grateful for your prayers.
